The brown cage free eggs helped some what but it was not the same. Of all the traveling I have done, the only time I cried and not wanting to go back to Houston was the Monday, September 19 as I was getting ready to check out of my hotel room. I plan to go back to this city every year.

THE CITY

Lisbon, capital of Portugal, is situated in the right bank of the Tagus River, and is known for its magnificent quality of sunlight, one of the reasons it has attracted innumerable artists and photographers, its beautiful architectural treasures contrast with the impressive modern structures, from the classical neighborhood of Baixa, built in 1755, and its medieval streets, to the contemporary Parque das Nações, built for the Expo 98, which makes Lisbon the perfect place to stroll and for tourism. From the city can also go on a Tagus River cruise or visit other localities of the Estoril coast, such as the picturesque town of Sintra, declared world heritage site.

Reasons to take the Metro in Lisbon, Portugal
Lisbon, Portugal is a beautiful city set on the Atlantic coast. The city was laid out with the foresight of automobiles and large avenues and magnificent roundabouts make up the grid of the city.
Lisbon is beautiful whether you are driving yourself, taking a taxi cab, or walking. But before you shun the need for public transportation, here are 4 reasons you should take the Lisbon Metro, even if you have no where to go.

1. Unique and beautiful metro stations

As part of a project to beautify the city and expand the rail system, the city commissioned Lisbon’s top architects to design many of the newer metro stations. Taking the red line (linho vermelho) or the blue line (linho asul) you will pass through some architecturally stunning stations, all of which are unique from one another and reflect the architect who designed them. Riding through is like a ride through a museum and worth the few euros you will spend on the fare.

2. Estação do Oriente

The first stop of the red line and considered Lisbon’s central station, the Orient Station is an incredible architectural work that you do not want to miss. Distinctively modern and conceptually beautiful, this station reflects the ever changing face of Lisbon and the concept that while much of the city has retained its heritage, much is moving forward as well.

3. Inexpensive and reliable service

Relative to many other European cities, taking the metro in Lisbon is quite cheap. Regardless of where you need to go in the city, most tickets will cost you under 3€ round-trip, including any transfers you may need to take. Couple this with the fact that the trains run so frequently you never need to wait more than 5-10minutes for the next one and taking the metro becomes convenient. There is never a need to check a timetable and even if you just missed the train, another will be along in no time.

4. Direct access to Columbo Shopping center

The blue line makes a stop at Colegio Militar Luz, directly under the largest indoor mall in all of Portugal: Columbo. Columbo is four stories of pure shopping bliss with every store conceivable for each type of shopper. Complete with a movie theater and a food court, this mall is so large that the only word for it is simply: overwhelming. Paved with marble floors and made top to bottom with the most exquisite of materials, the Columbo mall is worth stopping by even if you have no intention of shopping. You’ll be doing lots of walking to get around the inside of the mall so taking the metro is the most accessible way to get there—and you won’t have to bother with parking.

It’s true that public transportation can be a drag and cities rarely expend the time or funds into making them stunning and enjoyable. In Lisbon, however, even if you only take it once, hopping on the metro will be part of your cultural experience and will give you a flavor of just how modern and advanced a traditional city like Lisbon can be.HI

Since the 1990s Lisbon (Lisboa) became one of the new hot-spots for travellers in Europe. Vivid, small and steep historical streets, modernised areas, extensive nightlife till early morning, a fresh breeze from the sea even in hot summers make Lisbon a pleasant place for relaxing, sight-seeing and going out all altogether.Gay life also became very European. While some of the gay bars and clubs in the Principe Real area still remind a bit of times of hiding behind doors with bells, the old Bairro Alto district has a very visible gay life at night. In Bairro Alto it is pleasantly difficult to say which bar, cafe, restaurant and club is gay or gay-friendly or ›hetero-friendly‹ or whatever.Close to Lisbon you can also spend your time at the beach, whether you like your beach busy or quiet. South of Lisbon at Costa da Caparica ,there is a long, popular beach. Coming from Lisbon by car or bus (take the metro to Praça de Espanha, then the bus to Costa da Caparica) first there are family and conventional beaches. The further south you go the trendier and more nudist the beaches and the crowd become. The beaches are connected by a small train – for the gay beach get off at beach 17 and walk till beach 19 which also has a gay frequented bar. You will notice the cruising in the dunes. After sunset the beach and the dunes are rather unsafe and empty (last train back goes at 7).

Anyone who has been lucky enough to spend time in Buenos Aires during the summer months is well aware of the wonderful warm weather and how hot the city becomes every day. Fortunately, close at hand is the resort community of the Delta Tigre Islands just about a one hour journey to the north of the city. This is a large region—almost 400 square kilometers—of the Parana River Delta and the small low-lying islands forming the perfect community for an escape involving water sport activities to cool off and enjoy. No wonder the Rainbow Flag can be spotted along the waterways!

The main town of Tigre can be reached by taking the direct train from Retiro Station in Buenos Aires with about a forty-five minute journey and a round-trip ticket costing less than a dollar. It is so popular with the locals and tourists there is a special ticket booth dedicated to this route alone. Once in the town of Tigre there is a multitude of options to enjoy. Strolling around you can discover some of the historic architecture like the Buenos Aires Rowing Club headquarters built in 1878, or the Italian Canottieri Club, the waterfront includes the Parque de la Costa amusement park, and the Puerto Carpincho market abounds with local crafts and household items.

But the real fun is on the water and at the small island settlements. Numerous Catamaran tours are available from the heart of Tigre and the tours range from forty minutes to two hours with prices starting at about ten dollars. This is s a very good way to orient yourself on a first visit to the islands. Numerous water-side restaurants and bars are dotted along the river banks to create the perfect places for leisurely dining or just sipping a refreshing cocktail.

However, my first visit happened to be a Sunday at the gay-owned and operated Favela Bed & Breakfast Resort on the island of Tres Bocas. This was an organized day-trip excursion operated by Job Grobben of bagayschool.com and about a dozen of us met early in the morning for a gay day in the sun. The Tres Boca island is reached by water bus from the main Tigre terminal and the round-trip ticket is about three dollars and takes roughly thirty minutes depending on the number of stops made by the bus. If you are making this journey without a tour guide remember to inform the water bus staff where you need to disembark and they will tell you when you have reached that point. The Favela is just a short five minute walk from the main Tres Boca jetty and it is easy to find on the island map which is readily available upon arrival.

Our day at the resort included an asado lunch with fresh salads and hellado—ice cream—desert accompanied by local wine and soft drinks. The large swimming pool was a wonderful cooling respite from the city’s heat and the cash bar proved extremely popular for cold beers and more. For a small additional expense the on-site masseur was available to smooth away those urban tensions and make sure the afternoon by the pool was relaxing. Several guests also indulged with an afternoon siesta in the hammocks shaded by large trees. It was the perfect way to spend a Sunday when it was hovering around forty degrees in the city of Buenos Aires.

Throughout the islands there are many small and large public beaches, camping grounds, accommodations, and facilities for day-trippers to enjoy this natural paradise created by the large river’s delta. The tourist office beside the water bus ticket booth is an excellent source of information about the islands and most of the staff are fluent in English—all are very knowledgeable about the region. You may want to inquire about the Tren De La Costa as an alternative route home and although it is a slightly longer journey it is a more scenic route to enjoy.

One thing you will learn for certain is that around the Tigre Islands the size and shape of your jetty reflects upon your individualism.

Many gay people and artists are moving in the area and taking advantage of the low housing market and the beautiful homes available in the area. Many gay friendly businesses are moving towrds the boutique district and the park Avenue historical district. Many gay people are retiring in the area, for many of the same reasons. Hot Springs has a real nice official gay bar, but the town history of tolerance shows in the local restaurants and night clubs where everyone straight and gay easily mix, especially downtown.

By Roy Heale
Already a very popular destination with European and South American LGBT tourists, with each new season San Carlos De Bariloche is gaining in global popularity and recognition for being gay-friendly. Almost 3000 feet above sea level in Argentina’s snow-capped Andes Mountains with pristine blue-water lakes this region is remarkably eco-friendly and unscathed by man’s obsessive interference with the environment. Known as the Argentine Lake District and the Gateway to Patagonia this year-round outdoor adventure haven is the latest addition to the list of new, favorite gay travel destinations in South America. One visit to this spectacular region and the reasons for this acclamation are easily understandable.

Bearing in mind the southern hemisphere’s reversal of seasons, skiing and winter sports are available in July, August, and September. Some would say that this is the busiest tourist season in Bariloche. But the region’s year-round mild climate offers on-going activities including, hiking mountain trails, sailing, boat tours, kayaking, bird-watching, canopy tours, fly-fishing, river rafting, horseback rides, star-gazing, camping, and much more. Its nightlife includes renowned discos and raucous pubs which have led many visitors to wake up on a lakeside beach observing the sun as it ascends the mountain peaks casting its rays upon this quaint Andean city. Bariloche’s alluring mystique has resulted in many repeat visits.

Perhaps the hidden treasure of this region is its affordable pricing during the travel budget constraints of recent times. Many smart gay travelers have already discovered the great South American holiday bargains currently available and Argentina is top of the list for lower-cost vacations. Bariloche offers a skiing experience equal to North America’s Rocky Mountain slopes and the Austrian or Swiss Alps for scenery and downhill challenges, but at a considerably more reasonable price. The journey may be slightly longer but the ultimate rewards are immeasurable whether in costs or memories.

When it comes to LGBT travel to this region Bariloche Gay Travel is the first and only gay-owned and operated travel company located in the region. Specializing in working with gay visitors they ensure a positive, gay-friendly experience during any stay in this mountain paradise. Owner Cristian Signorelli has lived most of his life in Bariloche and is dedicated to welcoming LGBT tourists to the region and ensuring that their visit is memorable and hassle-free. He has developed a list of gay-friendly accommodations—from hostels to luxury boutique hotels— restaurants, bars, and attractions to ensure that all gay travelers can enjoy a wide range of year-round choices during their visit.

The town site of Bariloche is situated on the banks of the expansive Lake Nahuel Huapi with beautiful clear, blue water and numerous beaches. Unique to Argentina the local architecture of half-rounded logs and field-stone is reminiscent of European Alpine villages and has earned the town the nickname of “Little Switzerland”. The entire region is nestled in majestic mountains with large and small lakes of pristine waters ranging from royal blue to emerald green and every shade of color in between. Climbing any mountain or riding one of the several chair lifts is rewarded with spectacular vistas and around every turn in the road is a new, breathtaking view.

Just a short 18 kilometer drive from the heart of Bariloche is Cathedral Mountain ski resort and apres-ski village. It is the largest of its kind in the Southern hemisphere offering a wide variety of slopes for winter downhill skiing and hiking trails for the warmer months. The restaurants, hotels, and boutiques create the perfect village for those who prefer to stay at the base of the mountain. This is also the location of the Bariloche Gay Ski week held each year in September.

Numerous scenic tours are available and Bariloche Gay Travel can help organize any itinerary or plan customized personal tours. The Cau Cau Catamaran tour with Espacio S.A. to Victoria Island and the Arrayanes Woods is a must and can be either a half or full day adventure into nature. In the heart of the Arrayanes trees is the Walt Disney Cabin where rumor has it Disney was inspired to create the setting and scenery for his Bambi screen classic. The Seven Lakes tour is a day trip through magnificent forests, large valleys, and includes waterfront vistas of the Nahuel Huapi, Correntoso, Espejo, Escondido, Villarino, Falkner, and Machonico Lakes, plus stops in the quaint towns of Villa La Angostura and San Martin De Los Andes. A short two-hour journey heading south to El Bolson is rewarded with the small historic town markets and boutiques plus more unforgettable lakes and views along the route. Tours range from just a few hours to full day events ensuring that every day in the Lake District can offer new adventures with nature. The local experts at Bariloche Gay Travel are extremely knowledgeable of this entire region and will ensure that a gay-friendly welcome awaits every LGBT tourist.

Almost every new day is greeted with a dynamic sunrise over the mountain peaks and most evenings begin with a perfectly romantic sunset. Both are quite often reflected upon the mirror-like waters of the numerous lakes for double the magic.

So whatever the season in your hometown, pack your outdoor adventure gear and head to this pristine Argentine Lake District for a gay-friendly escape back to nature at an affordable price for any vacation budget.

In San Carlos de Bariloche, Argentina the snow-capped Andes mountains and expansive blue-water lakes are a major tourist attraction. In fact the region is known as the Argentina Lake District and covers a very large region at the gateway to Patagonia.

One of the gay-friendly boutique hotels is the Aldebaran Hotel and Spa situated 23km,about a 20 minute drive, from the heart of Bariloche on the San Pedro Peninsula. The property is very private and secluded with great views especially at sunset.

It was originally a private home until extra rooms were added to make it a ten-bedroom boutique hotel. The warmth and charm of the home still exist with beautiful stone masonry work and wonderful use of local wood. The common areas include a grand living room, small study and computer work station for guests, entertainment lounge, and small bar adjacent to the restaurant.

The rooms are very large and comfortable with some great views and balconies overlooking the lake. The hotel grounds include a solarium, indoor/outdoor swiming pool, jacuzzi, and full spa facilities. The cozy restaurant serves a buffet breakfast plus lunch and dinner.

All of the staff are extremely gay-friendly and speak some English to assist travellers.
